Investigadores do CITAD participam na obra "Colonial and Post-Colonial Landscapes: Architecture, Colonialism and War".
O Mestre Rui Jorge Alves Felício Seco da Costa foi o chair da sessão dedicada a "Under Golden Suns: Revisiting Late Modernist Typology Experiments"(pp.35-41), que teve o foco no impacto do CIAM 9 (Congresso Internacional de Arquitetura Moderna), realçando que "[…] to the new generations in the 1950s, the liberty experienced by architecture in North African territories under French rule was a hope for modernity […]. From a set of relatively unknown or overlooked projects and their founding context, the evolution of architecture throughout the second half of the 20th century was revised, with focus on innovation and freedom to experiment new solutions, set on a strong belief of architecture’s role in an evolving society, illustrated at CIAM 9 by the North African golden suns."
"Criss-crossing Architecture: The plural work of José Bastos" (pp.42-60) foi o trabalho desenvolvido pela Professora Doutora Arqt.ª Joana Filipa dos Santos Ferreira Borges Pereira, que apresenta "[…] the architectural contributions of Portuguese architect José Gomes Bastos, focusing on the influences and interactions between his projects in Portugal and Africa during the second half of the 20th century. Through the analysis of two case studies, a Pool in Tamariz (Portugal) and the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) headquarters in former Lourenço Marques (Mozambique), highlights the legacy and complexity of Bastos’s work as well as his innovative approach to design under local climatic and contextual conditions."
O Professor Doutor Arqt. João Miguel Ferreira Couto Duarte e a Professora Doutora Arqt.ª Maria João dos Reis Moreira Soares, docentes da Faculdade de Arquitetura e Artes (FAA) da Universidade Lusíada (Lisboa), examinaram, num capítulo intitulado "Under the shaded space: Le Corbusier and the Millowners’ Association Building" (pp.61-82), "[…] the architectural legacy of Le Corbusier in India, focusing on his design for the Mill Owners' Association headquarters in Ahmedabad as a paradigmatic example that reflects the context of India’s independence from British colonial rule and the city’s historic textile industry." Os autores destacaram […] the innovative aspects of its design, specifically tailored to the local climate and featuring a distinctive use of the in-between spaces."
Por último, a Professora Doutora Arqt.ª Ana Isabel Arez de Magalhães, docente da licenciatura em Arquitetura (mestrado integrado) da FAA, abordou "Beira, Mozambique: 1943' Urbanization Project. The Paradoxes of a Modern Plan in a Colonial Context" (pp.197-208), apresentando "[…] the history of Beira, in Mozambique, considering the multiple urban plans drawn for the city in the 20th century. It focuses on Beira's Urbanstion Plan, from 1951, to examine its paradoxical relationship with Patrick Abercrombie’s design, the Athens Charter’s ideology, and the concept of the Garden City. Magalhães argues that the plan laid the ground for Portuguese young architects to provide the city with modern buildings, by considering it a "laboratory" of ambivalences."
Esta coletânea "[...] it is a far-reaching and enriching collection and covers multiple topics, geographies, and time frames. The papers cross debates on heritage, urban planning, warscapes, modernist experiments, repair, religious missions, construction companies, military architecture, and education, among others."
